A 49-year-old man who worked as an Anchorage, Alaska, jail chaplain was arrested last Tuesday on charges he promised visitation privileges to female inmates in exchange for sexual favors. Ezell Williams is charged with third-degree sexual assault, a felony, and two counts each of fourth-degree sexual assault and official misconduct, all misdemeanors. He is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail at the Anchorage jail where he used to work. The charges say Williams promised the inmates he would get them contact visits with their children if they would submit to his sexual advances. At his arraignment last Tuesday, Williams limped forward to face the judge, answering most questions "Yes sir" or "No sir." Formerly president of the defunct Greater Faith Christian Mission, according to a database of public records, Williams is also a former pastor and current member of Faith Christian Community, said Bob Sloan, an associate pastor at the church. "There was no indication of any wrongdoing here," he said. Sloan said church officials spoke with their congregation in August, after Williams was fired as jail chaplain. Williams was present at some of the discussions, he said. Reached at her home Tuesday, Williams' wife declined to comment. Williams was hired as a chaplain for the East and West wings of the Anchorage Correctional Complex, formerly the Anchorage Jail and Cook Inlet Pre-Trial Facility, in spring 2002, according to troopers. He had extensive experience as a pastor, a prison ministry volunteer and a volunteer chaplain, according to Alaska Department of Corrections Deputy Commissioner Portia Parker. |
