The Essex County (N.J.) Prosecutor's Office is investigating an apparent beating death inside the county jail. Authorities say a 50-year-old man was found lying in his cell March 20. The man apparently died from blunt force trauma to the head, but officials say the exact cause of death will not be determined until further tests are completed.
The incident is the second time in the last six months that an inmate has died under unorthodox circumstances. News 12 New Jersey spoke with people that were recently released from the Essex County jail. They say the facility is very violent and that inmates are constantly fighting with one another.
The motive behind last weekend's apparent attack remains unknown. Authorities are beginning to move some Essex County inmates to a new jail in Newark. According to officials, the new state-of-the-art facility was designed in a way that will reduce violent episodes between prisoners.
