LOUISIANA – Louisiana State Penitentiary is hosting the first ever Pastor’s Appreciation Day to celebrate the religious community and its involvement in prisoner reentry. More than 600 pastors and church members from around the U.S. will attend the March 25 event. Pastor Jim Cymbala of New York’s Brooklyn Tabernacle will be a featured speaker and will address the success of LSP’s moral rehabilitation programming, implemented by LSP Warden Burl Cain in 1995. “I can teach skills and a trade, but if I don’t have a moral component, I’ve just made a smarter criminal,” Cain explains. “And, these programs enhance an inmate’s ability to move into a more morale environment upon release from prison.” Reentry programs like “Corrections Organized for Reentry” depend on religious volunteers and organizations to facilitate the successful reintegration of inmates back into the community. Each year, the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections releases approximately 15,000 inmates. |
