California Department of Corrections officers searching for an escaped inmate caught a wanted parolee in Norco last Tuesday after he tried to run from them in a river wash, officials said. The 35-year-old parolee had stopped showing up for checks with his Riverside County parole officer and had a warrant for his arrest, said Corrections Lt. Tim Shirlock. He was on parole after being convicted in 1995 of vehicle theft, being a repeat offender and having a disregard for safety, according to court records. Officers were in the area of Second Street and River Drive in Norco around 11:30 a.m. looking for an inmate from the California Rehabilitation Center who had escaped while doing work for the city of Norco on March 22. They spotted the parolee at the river bottom and thought he was the escaped inmate, Shirlock said. When they approached the man, he began to run, the lieutenant said. Officers chased him for about 10 minutes on foot before he was caught, said Shirlock. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department took him into custody. |
