Decorated officer wins another payout

NEW ZEALAND - A decorated prison [officer] the Corrections Department spent almost $300,000 trying to sack has won another payout against his employers. After an 18-month legal battle, long-serving Rimutaka prison [officer] Rakai Tawhiwhirangi has been awarded nearly $100,000 in costs including $10,000 compensation. It is the second time Corrections has been forced to pay compensation to Tawhiwhirangi. In 1993 he won $22,000 after he was suspended.

In the latest incident, the 55-year-old was sacked for allegedly assaulting an inmate who asked him to smuggle drugs and cellphones into the jail. Sunday News revealed last year Employment Court Judge Coral Shaw ruled the dismissal was unjustified. Read more.
