NEW ZEALAND - A decorated prison [officer] the Corrections Department spent almost $300,000 trying to sack has won another payout against his employers. After an 18-month legal battle, long-serving Rimutaka prison [officer] Rakai Tawhiwhirangi has been awarded nearly $100,000 in costs including $10,000 compensation. It is the second time Corrections has been forced to pay compensation to Tawhiwhirangi. In 1993 he won $22,000 after he was suspended. In the latest incident, the 55-year-old was sacked for allegedly assaulting an inmate who asked him to smuggle drugs and cellphones into the jail.
