| OpEd: Mich. losing con game |

MICHIGAN - BM has an old motto that still makes as much sense as ever: "You can't manage what you can't measure." Now, we all know that Michigan needs a big-time transformation to get through today's tough times and on to a prosperous future. We need something that will give us a vibrant, diversified economy and make this a state where talented people are welcomed. We need Michigan to again become a wonderful place to live, where you can bring up a family in revitalized towns that are surrounded by world-class natural resources. The big issue, of course, is ... how do we get there? Whatever the path, getting there is bound to require an economic compass — a way to measure where we are and check to determine how much progress we have made. We need a set of benchmarks and metrics to measure — and manage — our progress. So let me offer one. The Center for Michigan has just published a first-ever comprehensive benchmarking study, "Michigan Scorecard: Benchmarks for Michigan's Transformation." Read more.
