WASHINGTON - Since when does a nutritionally balanced meal violate the Bill of Rights? Since – so claims a class action lawsuit on behalf of Vermont inmates – the meal in question is Nutraloaf. Cruel? Possibly. Unusual? No. Many other states have their own versions of Vermont’s prison delicacy. Elsewhere, it’s called Nutriloaf, Prison Loaf, Food Loaf, Confinement Loaf, Meal Loaf, Special Management Meal. The idea is always the same: Take meat, beans, veggies and other foodstuffs – or maybe just the leftovers from the regular jail meal – and blend them into a slab of bland yuckiness. Cook, serve to problem inmates – the kind who throw feces, attack guards, make shivs of their plastic knives and forks. Read more.
