Longtime prison chief, Lyons, dies

PENNSYLVANIA - EDMUND H. LYONS got to be warden of the old Holmesburg Prison in an unusual way: Through pressure by hungry prisoners. Inmates went on a hunger strike in December 1972 because they objected to the policies of then- warden Joseph P. McGowan - among other complaints. Replacing McGowan was one of their demands. When Lyons was named to take over, the prisoners returned to the mess hall.

Edmund Lyons rose through the ranks of the prison system from corrections guard in 1950 to superintendent of the city's prisons in 1978. Ed, a decorated Navy veteran of World War II and longtime civic leader, died of complications of surgery last Wednesday. He was 82 and lived in Bustleton. Read more.
