| Department gets $1.8 million boost |

NEW HAMPSHIRE - As many as 50 or 60 New Hampshire prison inmates are so sickly and spend so much time in the infirmary that they could be eligible for a nursing home facility, prison officials told lawmakers yesterday. Legislators, who yesterday approved a $1.8 million transfer to help the prison pay its medical bills, encouraged prison officials to look into the possibility of creating a long-term care facility for such inmates. That way, some said, matching federal Medicaid dollars for care of the poor and frail could potentially be tapped to help cover treatment. Seriously ill inmates are only part of the problem facing the prison in regard to medical costs, Corrections Commissioner William Wrenn told the Joint Legislative Fiscal Committee. The spiraling price of prescription medicine has prison officials investigating whether an "older generation" of drugs would work to treat the mentally ill, Wrenn said. The state is also paying for dialysis for three inmates at a cost of $2,700 a week each, or about $140,000 a year per person. Read more.
