ARIZONA - A friend and fellow advocate for reformation of the prison system sent to me the Feb. 24 column by Ricky Williams, a prison inmate, “Nothing to combat recidivism.” It never ceases to amaze me that the government agency with the largest ”human resources” pool in the United States, refuses to utilize its own resources. Prisons are full of people with untapped talents and skills — doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers, construction professionals, laborers, etc. — yet prisons continue to buy and hire outside for everything they need at the expense of taxpayers. I'd like to know which “genius pool” decided to kowtow to the envious howling of private interests, to the point of destroying the former self-sufficiency of a vital state agency.
