| Prison closure could lead to layoffs |

CALIFORNIA - The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is preparing to send letters to its 2,768 employees in San Joaquin County, telling them the area is subject to layoffs with the upcoming closure this year of a Stockton-area youth prison. “It’s too early to say that we’re not going to have any layoffs,” department spokesman George Kostyrko said. “Our goal is to make sure we don’t have them.” The DeWitt Nelson Youth Correctional Facility southeast of Stockton is scheduled to close by July 31 as the population of youthful offenders declines. The loss of 293 corrections jobs will have a ripple effect on other state prison employees in San Joaquin County. Employees at N.A. Chaderjian Youth Correctional Facility, Deuel Vocational Institution and state parole offices will be notified of the upcoming reduction in jobs and how it could affect them, Kostyrko said.
