TENNESSEE - A Haywood County criminal justice complex that drew some objections over its location is expected to be completed by 2010. The proposed complex will combine the Haywood County Sheriff's Department, courts and jail in a Brownsville strip mall building that was once home to a Wal-Mart and is adjoined by two businesses. The Haywood County Commission voted March 17 to build the complex at Dupree and East Main. Around 400 people signed a petition against having the justice center located in the district represented by commissioner Robert Green. He said that he opposed the project before any site had been chosen because he thought it could end up in his area. District 3, once home to the Brownville city jail, now has a justice academy and has become more congested since a new Wal-Mart and Walgreen's were built there, he said. Green said that as the old-Wal-Mart began drawing attention as the place to build the complex, issues about having an elementary school and senior citizens home nearby were brought up. Read more.
