IOWA - Some Iowa prisoners with serious mental illness have been transferred from Fort Madison to Oakdale, where they can receive better psychiatric care, an Iowa prison spokesman confirmed Monday. A Republican legislator said he approves of the shift but said it raises questions about Gov. Chet Culver's plan to spend $130.7 million on a new maximum-security prison at Fort Madison. Sixteen inmates with mental illness have been transferred in recent weeks from the Iowa State Penitentiary to the Oakdale state prison near Iowa City, said Fred Scaletta, an executive officer for the Iowa Department of Corrections.
