| Justice budget may be cut |

FLORIDA - Florida's courthouses, prisons and law enforcement agencies would be dealt a major blow under House and Senate budget plans that would cut more than $200 million in funding for the state's criminal justice system. The cuts aren't final, as both plans, which cleared House and Senate budget committees Thursday, await approval from the full chambers. Votes by both chambers are expected next week. If approved, House and Senate lawmakers would begin working on a compromise that could soften the impact. The potential effects of such cuts, lawmakers acknowledge, include hundreds of lost jobs, early prisoner releases, giant backlogs of court cases, a decline in prison security, and the elimination of arbitration services and drug abuse programs.
