| Bill overhaul allows county control |

MAINE - Gov. John Baldacci’s legislation to take over the county jails has been totally rewritten by the Legislature’s Criminal Justice Committee, which is recommending that the counties retain control of the jails and a new corrections board be established to coordinate between state and county correctional facilities. Sen. Bill Diamond, D-Windham, co-chairman of the committee, said Thursday that "if this bill passes, the state will be able to utilize beds around the state in various county jails instead of having to build a new prison." Panel members from both parties have been critical of the governor’s proposal since he first suggested a state takeover of the county jails last summer. Read more.
