Jail plan clears first hurdle

MAINE - A bill that's been at the center of controversy among county and state corrections circles passed a committee vote Thursday and will be presented to lawmakers in the House and Senate in the coming weeks.

The 10-1 Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee vote to pass a bill bringing Maine's prison system together with county jails was "satisfying after all the hard work put into this proposal," said Kennebec County Administrator Robert Devlin. Read more.
