Jail now baby safe haven

ILLINOIS - Lake County Jail is now a safe haven for babies. "They can drop off a baby at the lobby with no questions asked, and we will see to the safety of that child, 24 hours a day," said Jennifer Witherspoon, chief of corrections with the Lake County sheriff's office.

The jail lobby is at 20 S. County St., Waukegan. Witherspoon and Sheriff Mark Curran said the safety of abandoned babies is the primary focus of the program. The Illinois Abandoned Newborn Infant Protection law allows a parent to leave an unharmed baby 7 days old or younger with a staff member at a "safe haven," a staffed fire station, police station, hospital, or emergency medical facility.
