A new report critical of Vermont's prisons isn't critical enough, according to the father of one inmate who died. Investigators studied the deaths of seven inmates and found that the system failed in three cases -- but not in the case of Jeremy Garcia. His father, Luis Garcia, wants the state to be held accountable for his son's death. Jeremy Garcia, 25, was on furlough when he overdosed on a prescription painkiller and died. The investigation of inmate deaths found that in the Garcia case, at least, the Department of Corrections did everything it could to try to save Jeremy Garcia. The report found that extraordinary efforts by dedicated probation officers were unsuccessful. But in a scathing letter, Luis Garcia called those efforts irresponsible, unprofessional and a deplorable failure. Garcia blames his son's death on Jeremy Garcia's addiction and the corrections system's failure to treat it. Secretary of Human Services Charlie Smith said last Monday he hadn't seen Garcia's letter, but that he was confident the report on inmate deaths was balanced, well-researched and that its results are sound. |
