OpEd: Lost Boys need us to think

WINNIPEG, CANADA - I've heard them called a lot of names. I'm referring to those "punks" and "joyriders" and "young offenders" who infuriate and endanger the public by habitually stealing anything with a motor and four wheels. But I'd never heard these ambassadors for our national image called "Lost Boys." Not until Monday.

That phrase was uttered by a retired elementary schoolteacher who had accompanied her husband to deliver a tag-team lecture to members of city hall's protection committee. Sel and Christine Burrows decided to speak up after seeing something in Saturday's Free Press. It was a tired old story, with a new twist. City orders study as youth bail system frustrates police, the headline read. Our Stephen Harper-friendly civic leaders had reacted to the public shock and outrage over two high-profile incidents in one tragic weekend by deciding to jab yet another pointed finger in the justice system's chest.
