| Democrats push jail hiring |

NEW YORK - Despite a countywide hiring freeze, Dutchess County Democrats have proposed hiring five new correction officers and a new jail administrator to appease the state Commission of Correction. County Legislature Majority Leader Sandra Goldberg said the last-minute addition to lawmakers' April agenda is in response to a March 26 letter from Commission Chairman Daniel Stewart, giving the county 60 days to bring its jail staffing levels up to state standards. The state still requires the jail to maintain a 233-member security staff, including administrative and direct inmate supervision positions, he said. Failure to bring staffing up to the appropriate levels, Stewart wrote, "will ensue further action by this agency." Goldberg said County Executive William Steinhaus has authorized the administrator's position, vacant since the retirement of former Jail Administrator Gary Christensen, be filled.
