| UNICEF launches juvenile justice reforms |

GEORGIA - The Ministry of Justice and UNICEF have developed a project to reform Georgia’s embattled juvenile justice system. According to the developers, the three year project will include establishment of relevant policies, human resources, and rehabilitative programmes for minors involved in the judicial system. The number of juvenile prisoners in Georgia increases every year and many feel this has become a serious problem for the country. Data provided by the Penitentiary Department shows that the number of juvenile prisoners rose from 84 in 2004, to 322 in 2007. The Ministry of Justice says that currently there are 198 convicted minor inmates while 105 are in preliminary custody. Read more.
