| Prisons trim 701 support jobs |

OHIO - A day after the state's prison system tallied a record number of inmates, the agency announced yesterday that it is cutting 701 jobs because of the weak economy and an expected state budget shortfall. The figure includes 539 positions that will be abolished and 162 vacancies that will not be filled, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said. The job cuts are expected within 90 days. The reduction, which represents nearly 5 percent of the agency's 14,500 workers, mainly involves support jobs and does not include corrections officers, parole officers, teachers or nurses because of the critical services they provide, the agency said. Director Terry J. Collins said the agency also decided not to close a prison because of the increasing inmate population, which reached a record 50,099 on Monday and is expected to hit 55,000 by 2010. Read more.
