Two correctional officers who were held hostage by inmates in a prison watchtower have been medically cleared to return to work, a Department of Corrections official said.
Corrections spokeswoman Cam Hunter said that although the two officers have been given the OK by doctors to go back, no return date has been set.
The pair were taken hostage Jan. 18 in a tower at the Buckeye prison by inmates Ricky Wassenaar and Steven Coy. The male officer was released Jan. 24. The female officer, Lois Fraley, was set free when the inmates surrendered Feb. 1.
Fraley said she was sexually assaulted by both inmates. The male officer suffered a fracture near his eye socket when he was hit with a metal stirring paddle during the initial takeover of the tower.
Both have told the department they want to continue their employment there, Hunter said.
Corrections officials have not determined what assignments the two would receive. "That's being explored," Hunter said.
Fraley has appeared on national television recounting her ordeal, but the Citizen is withholding the male officer's name as he is a victim and has not publicly released his identity.
