Legislature okays property negotiations

NEW YORK - Dutchess County Executive William Steinhaus has the go-ahead to negotiate acquisition of a large vacant lot, owned by the City of Poughkeepsie, next to the county jail on Hamilton Street. The county legislature narrowly approved the resolution, after a lively debate over ultimate intention. Democrat Majority Leader Sandra Goldberg said it’s not about expanding the jail; it’s a business move, she claimed. But, in defending the motion, it was all about corrections.

“This property is adjacent to the sheriff’s building. It is difficult to anticipate what our needs will be in the coming years. To have to move anything or any part of the criminal justice system to another location would be far more costly than to have the land that is contiguous to our current property to be able to use it.” Read more.
