NEW JERSEY - Corrections Commissioner George Hayman will appear before the Assembly Budget Committee this afternoon to discuss the department's proposed $1.149 billion budget and the use of three programs that officials hope will reduce the number of inmates behind bars. The Department of Corrections is forecasting a $30 million savings, based partly on plans to increase the use of drug courts and the intensive supervision program and an initiative that sends parole violators to assessment centers rather than prison.
