WYOMING – The Wyoming Department of Corrections (WYDOC) recently shipped 1,500 pounds of tilapia fish to Denver from the Wyoming Women’s Center, the first shipment of its kind. The tilapia growing operation is the first prison industry for the facility. Developed in August of 2006, the tilapia industry at the Women’s Center currently employs 16 inmates. The fish for the first shipment had been growing for the last eight months. All money from the sale will fund WYDOC’s industry programs. The department’s industry jobs pay 80 dollars a month, the highest of any inmate jobs in Wyoming. The prison industry programs are intended to provide inmates with real world work experience and transferable job skills. ![]() A bucket of the fish ![]() Inmates get in the fish tanks |
