| Less time for violent criminals |

NEW ZELAND - Violent criminals are spending less time in prison, National Party MP Simon Power said tonight when he released figures from a Ministry of Justice report. Mr Power, National's justice and corrections spokesman, said the figures showed the average length of prison sentences imposed for all violent offences, including murder, had dropped by 11.9 percent since 2002. "This follows the release of crime statistics earlier this month which showed that violent offences have increased by 12.3 percent in the space of a year, and by a staggering 43.6 percent since Labour took office in 1999," he said.
