Overhaul overdue says advocates

NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR, CANADA - A new review of Newfoundland and Labrador's jails cannot be completed quickly enough, advocates and former inmates say. Justice Minister Jerome Kennedy announced the sweeping review on Friday, and said two out-of-province experts are expected to complete their work in two months. Cindy Murphy, executive director of the John Howard Society in Newfoundland and Labrador, said the review is "long overdue, but certainly welcome."

Murphy called for a greater focus on rehabilitation for inmates. "They're still facing the same problems once they return to the community," she said. "And again, they get caught up in this continuing cycle of reoffending." Read more.
