5 teen inmates escape from juvenile correctional facility

Five teen inmates at an Indiana correctional facility for girls escaped Monday after staging their own version of a spring break.
The escapees apparently used the edge of a dresser drawer to break a window at the Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility and slipped out after 8:15 p.m., when they were last accounted for in a routine check. The five, allowed to wear their own clothes, were proving difficult for authorities to find Tuesday.
Ranging in age from 16 to 18, the five had been sent to the correctional facility in connection with mostly nonviolent crimes such as theft, illegal consumption and operating a vehicle without a license.
A 17-year-old was from Marion County; the others were from Elkhart, Lake, Wayne and Jennings counties. Prison officials did not release their names.
The girls turned up missing about 8:55 p.m. Monday during an emergency count of inmates sparked by a report of a broken window at the facility, 2596 Girls School Road.
Speedway and Clermont police were notified, as was the Marion County Sheriff's Department.
"Spring break week is part of the problem," said Indiana Department of Correction spokeswoman Pam Pattison. "The other difficulty is they do wear their own clothing, so it's harder to recognize them."
The escapees likely ran toward Girls School Road or to nearby Crawfordsville Road, near I-465. She said prison officials notified the home counties of the teens.
The last escape from the facility was in April 2003.
The juvenile facility had 181 inmates Tuesday.
