| Waldo jail stays open in new plan |

MAINE - Last year, overcrowding in state prisons had the corrections commissioner looking to Oklahoma to board the excess prisoners. But that is about to change, due to a merger of the state prison and county jails that will provide between 300 and 400 extra beds, according to Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story. Gov. John Baldacci signed a new initiative in corrections that will place both the state and county systems under the supervision of a nine-member Board of Corrections, the sheriff explained. The board will decide the future uses of all the state's correctional facilities, including the local jail that was scheduled for closure in the governor's original consolidation plan. Read more.
