Two state prison superintendents have been suspended with pay following an investigation into the deaths of seven people who died in state custody, Corrections Commissioner Steve Gold will announce today. Gold told department employees and lawmakers in an e-mail Tuesday afternoon about the suspensions of St. Albans prison superintendent Charles Hatin and Newport superintendent Kathleen Lanman. Two other corrections employees have been put on administrative leave. Gold is scheduled to present a plan today to address concerns about the Corrections system that arose after an investigation into the department in response to seven inmates deaths, including two suicides, in the past two years. "I assure you that the plan that Commissioner Gold will detail tomorrow is comprehensive in its scope and it involves a great deal more than is suggested in the e-mail," Jason Gibbs, a spokesman for Gov. Jim Douglas, said Tuesday. The governor has reviewed the plan Gold will present today to the Legislature's Corrections Oversight Committee, Gibbs said. Hatin did not return a phone call seeking comment and Lanman said she had no comment. Susan Blair, who had been superintendent at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington, will head the St. Albans prison. Celeste Girrell, superintendent of Northeast Regional Correctional Facility in St. Johnsbury, will serve as interim head of the Newport prison, according to Gold's e-mail. "The Department is committed to addressing the issues that have come to light as a result of this investigation," Gold wrote in the e-mail. |
