Inmates help with river cleanup

ALABAMA - The annual Renew Our Rivers cleanup officially begins Wednesday, but inmates from the Etowah County jail began Monday removing trash along the river. Scott Hassell, chief of corrections, said about 40 inmates in the Substance Abuse Treatment Program will spend the week supervised by off-duty deputies picking up trash and removing items from the river and the river banks.

Lisa Dover is executive director of Keep Etowah Beautiful, which sponsors Renew Our Rivers and the local effort of the Great American Cleanup, a land cleanup. Dover said some volunteers help clean up portions of the Coosa this week. Read more.
