MICHIGAN - A Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office Corrections supervisor was charged with felony embezzlement today after he allegedly stole more than $20,000 from inmate accounts. Sgt. Dan Smoke, a shift supervisor and a member of the sheriff’s office for 8.5 years, faces a 10-year sentence if convicted. Sheriff Ron Kalanquin said he began an extensive investigation after sheriff’s deputies discovered the discrepancies in the inmate accounts. The county Finance Department was asked to close the account, Kalanquin said, and county auditors continue to review the transactions. Read more.
