| County corrections feels budget woes |

OREGON - Facing the same cuts that threatened last year’s budgets as Secure Rural Schools payments lapsed, public safety services and staff, jail facilities and work camps may disappear. Hard times at Lane County have translated into hard times for county corrections services, and county officials lately have not been shy about the numbers. When commissioners prepare to crunch a budget next week that looks likely to lose federal timber funds, county officials say that regardless of what happens with the budget, corrections and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office are already suffering. There are a total of 507 beds in the Lane County Jail right now. Lane County Sheriff Russ Burger said that of those 507 beds, 107 are already closed. The beds must be closed when there are not enough funds to finance the staff that supervises those inmates, said Burger. Read more.
