MICHIGAN - Removing federal oversight of mental health care in Michigan prisons would needlessly endanger the safety of thousands of inmates. During hearings last week in U.S. District Court in front of Judge Robert Jonker in Grand Rapids, the state argued that it has complied with a preliminary injunction on mental health care issued in November 2006, and that the mental health provisions of the Hadix case, filed by inmates in the 1980s, should now be closed.
