A state prison officer was hospitalized Friday after two inmates allegedly attacked him, officials said. The beating at the California State Prison, Los Angeles County, occurred about 2 p.m. when the officer allegedly was jumped, beaten to the ground and kicked in the head, said Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections. The officer was transferred by air at 2:50 p.m. to a hospital and was in stable condition, Thornton said. A CAT scan revealed some swelling on the left side of his brain, but she said the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and the officer is alert. Gregory Paul Gaines, 20, serving a sentence for attempted second-degree robbery, and Harold Xavier Wesley, 29, serving a sentence for rape, allegedly confessed to the beating, Thornton said. Both inmates are being transferred to the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi until the investigation into the incident has been completed, Thornton said. Because of security concerns, the hospital where the officer is staying will not be identified, Thornton said. His name was not released pending notification of his wife. |
