Judge clears the road on hiring

ILLINOIS - A federal judge suspended state laws and union agreements Thursday, allowing more than a dozen temporary security officers to begin training next week for jobs at the short-staffed Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center.

U.S. District Judge John Nordberg's order also grants Earl Dunlap, the transitional administrator of the facility since August, the freedom to bypass a union contract to redistribute current, more experienced staff who work nights to critical daytime positions.Read more.
