More than 300 share cells

EXETER, ENGLAND - More than 300 inmates at Exeter jail are having to share cells meant for one in a further sign of the overcrowding crisis gripping the nation's prisons. Latest figures showed that 352 prisoners were sharing cells designed for one person with another inmate.At the end of February, 32 convicts held at Channings Wood, near Newton Abbot, were also having to "double-up" because of the chronic shortage of prison spaces.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "Protecting the public is our first priority, and we will always ensure that there are places for those serious and dangerous offenders who ought to be in prison.

"There is nothing new in doubling up. It has been used in prisons for many years as part of efforts to maximise use of the existing prison estate." Read more.
