| Senator: Prisons overcrowded, understaffed |

NEW YORK - enator Charles Schumer says the state's four federal prisons, two of which are in the city, are overcrowded and understaffed. Schumer says the prison in Brooklyn is 55 percent over capacity with 78 open positions as of March 1st. At the Manhattan prison, the senator says they are 60 percent over capacity with 39 open jobs. He claims the overcrowding is so bad that prisoners are assigned to sleep in living rooms and other non-cell areas. Read more.
