FLORIDA - The state Department of Corrections may be ready to negotiate an agreement that could help the city pay some of the $17 million debt on its mostly unused sewage-treatment plant. City officials have worked for two years to see whether Lake Correctional Institution, a state prison with 1,100 inmates on U.S. Highway 27 north of Minneola, would consider shutting down an aging package plant that handles wastewater on site. The state then could hook up to Minneola's sewer system, which would cost the prison millions of dollars in sewer capacity fees although it also would save the cost of possibly replacing and operating its own on-site treatment plant. In a letter received by the city, a state official said a deal is possible if Minneola will spread out the payment of $2.8 million in hookup fees. Read more.
