INDIANA - [Offficers] overseeing state prisoners could be endangered by Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez's decision to rescind their authority to carry weapons on the job, the program's director said Tuesday. Lake County Community Corrections Executive Director Kellie Bittorf said the agency may seek special firearms licenses through the Indiana State Police after Dominguez announced he would revoke special deputy appointments from Community Corrections employees. Dominguez and Bittorf have been at loggerheads for weeks over the use of a wing of the Sheriff's Work Release program. The Lake County commissioners recently ruled the space should be converted into beds for 35 state prisoners for Community Corrections, apparently prompting Dominguez to recall the deputy appointments.
