A fire at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution at Dallas, Chase, last Thursday afternoon forced the evacuation of one cellblock of inmates and sent two correctional officers to the hospital for smoke inhalation, according to Kenneth Burnett, assistant to the prison superintendent. The fire, which began at about 2:30 p.m., was reported to have been caused by an electrical problem in the laundry room, Burnett said. Once the fire was noticed, the institution's emergency plan was activated and 911 was called. Smoke poured through some parts of the facility, causing the evacuation of at least one cellblock, accounting for approximately 110 inmates, Burnett said. Local fire and emergency crews arrived quickly and, with the help of the prison's Fire Emergency Response Team, extinguished the fire, which was contained to the laundry room, Burnett said. No inmates were injured during the fire, Burnett said. |
