MISSOURI - Terrence never was a likely candidate for Harvard, but in two weeks, he’ll be there, standing behind a lectern. This teenage boy, who once banged with a Kansas City gang and who still wears his baggy pants low on his backside, will be on the Ivy League campus to share two stories. One is about his second chance at a life. The other is about the system that is turning him, and thousands of other adolescents, around — and gaining a national reputation for it. Missouri’s Division of Youth Services was selected last month as one of 50 nominees for the Innovations in American Government Awards, given out at Harvard University each September. The youth services division picked Terrence to speak on its behalf on June 12 as the program begins to winnow down the semifinalists to a few winners. Read more.
