Lose an inmate? Look in jail.

CALIFORNIA - A suspect listed as one of Merced County's Most Wanted has been located -- but Merced County sheriff's investigators didn't have to look too far to find him. Andrew Gardner Roggero, 37, was found in Madera County Jail after members of his family contacted the Merced County Sheriff's Department, saying Roggero has been in jail all along.

The Madera County Department of Corrections confirmed that Roggero is being held in the jail. He was arrested by the Chowchilla Police Department, booked into jail on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and transportation and sale of a controlled substance, according to the Madera County Department of Corrections Web site. Even though Roggero has been in custody at Madera County Jail more than three months, Merced County deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman, said his department was not aware of it.

Roggero was wanted in Merced County on a $1 million warrant on a methamphetamine charge and violation of probation. He also was wanted in Atwater on a $26,000 warrant on suspicion of possession of stolen property, burglary and possession of burglary tools, MacKenzie said.

"When he was booked, they are supposed to call us to put an agency hold on him. That was never done," MacKenzie said.

But Tonya Riviere, administrative supervisor for Chowchilla police, said her department did contact the Merced County sheriff. "We did follow policy on this case," she said.

MacKenzie said suspects for most wanted profiles are determined according to seriousness of the crime and how recently the crime was committed. Sheriff's investigators submit the individuals who are showcased. About 80% of those profiled have been arrested since the program began in 2004, MacKenzie said.
