UNITED KINGDOM - The number of prisoners in England and Wales passed 83,000 for the first time yesterday. Pressure on jail places will be eased next month, when a new law allows the release of inmates after they have served half their sentences, instead of two thirds. The legislation equalises the arrangements for offenders sentenced under the 1991 Criminal Justice Act with those of the 2003 Criminal Justice Act. It is likely that about about 550 non-violent and non-sexual offenders will be freed as a result of the measure, to be implemented over 14 months from June 9. Read more.
