A company that provided medical care for inmates at Palm Beach and St. Lucie (Fla.) county jails will pay $5 million for illegally billing the government.
EMSA Limited Partnership fraudulently billed Medicaid for nearly $2.7 million according to Attorney General Charlie Crist. Under last Wednesday's agreement, that money will be reimbursed, and EMSA will also pay a $2.3 million fine. The state's Medicaid program will get half of that.
EMSA was bought out by America Service Group Inc. in 1999. Tennessee-based America Service Group merged EMSA into Prison Health Services, another of its subsidiaries, at the Palm Beach County Jail.
The investigation found fraudulent billing practices at 15 county jails and three prisons in the state between 1998 and 2000.
