| Prison savings to cut surcharge |

MICHIGAN - Interest in altering Michigan's business tax is continuing to swirl. Senate Republicans at the Detroit Regional Chamber's Mackinac Policy Conference on Thursday released early findings of a subcommittee that's been holding hearings on the impact of the new Michigan Business Tax. And Gov. Jennifer Granholm is floating the idea of using savings from corrections reforms to reduce the nearly 22 percent surcharge that was tacked onto the MBT last year. Granholm would like the business community to support moving reforms in the Michigan Department of Corrections through the Legislature. In return, she proposes to put the savings toward three uses: a reduction in the MBT surcharge, funding for higher education, and funding for law enforcement, said Liz Boyd, Granholm's press secretary.
