| OpEd: Filmmakers win, taxpayers lose |

MICHIGAN - Last week, a movie was shot at the old Jackson prison the state shut down last year. We're supposed to be excited. It's creating jobs and rejuvenating our economy, state leaders say. Yeah, something like that. I, and many others, would contend that the hundreds of employees at the Jackson prison were contributing to the Jackson economy just fine before the state closed the Southern Michigan Correctional Facility. For a few days, the cameras and lights were turned on and actors read their lines. Now they can leave with a nice fat check paid for by Michigan taxpayers. A state estimate says the film incentive package recently signed into law will cost the state $100 million next year. Read more.
