Brevard sheriff says staff at cookout when inmate killed himself

Supervisors at the Brevard County (Fla.) Detention Center were at a cookout on the same day that an inmate committed suicide, Sheriff Phil Williams said.
Williams has ordered an internal affairs investigation in the suicide of William Gamez, the fifth inmate in four months to commit suicide at the jail.
Williams said last Tuesday that he said is reopening investigations into the four other inmate deaths that have occurred since December.
Two weeks ago, on the day Gamez killed himself, supervisors were barbecuing on the jail grounds, along with some of the officers, rather than providing hundreds of inmates with adequate supervision, Williams said.
"A lot of the work wasn't done," Williams said. "Logbooks were not filled out, and most important, inmates had no supervision."
The jail's corrections officers should respond aggressively to any sign that an inmate may be contemplating suicide or hurting another inmate or officers, Williams said.
"Guards have to approach their jobs with the same kind of intensity that the member of a bomb squad would," Williams said. "Every threat has to be taken seriously."
