| County braces for more inmates |

INDIANA - The Lake County Jail's inmate problem went from bad to worse Thursday with news the Gary Police Department plans to close its transitional jail. Gary Police Chief Lawrence Wright told Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez to expect at least 60 more inmates a week at the already crowded county jail when the Gary facility shuts its doors July 7 in a move which should save the city about $1 million a year. Dominguez said the influx will cost his office at least $1.2 million a year, and probably much more. "That number doesn't include increased medical costs or additional overtime for the corrections officers we will need to guard these new inmates," Dominguez said. Read more.
